1. Yield strength:
There is a certain relationship between the yield strength of the material and the fatigue limit. Generally speaking, the higher the yield strength of the material, the higher the fatigue strength is. Therefore, in order to improve the fatigue strength of the spring, it is necessary to try to improve the yield strength of the spring material, or the material with a high ratio of yield strength and tensile strength.
Fine grain structure has a higher yield strength than coarse grain structure for the same material.
2. Surface materials
The maximum stress mostly occurs on the surface of the spring material, so the surface quality of the spring has a great influence on the fatigue strength.
The less the surface roughness, the less the stress concentration, and the higher the fatigue strength.
The fatigue strength of the spring can be improved by grinding, strong pressing, shot blasting and rolling on the surface of the material.
3. Size effect
The larger the size of the material, the higher the possibility of defects caused by various cold and hot machining processes, and the greater the possibility of surface defects, which will lead to the fatigue performance degradation, so the size effect should be considered when calculating the fatigue strength of the spring.
4. Metallurgical defects
Metallurgical defects refer to nonmetallic inclusions, bubbles, segregation of elements in materials, etc.
The inclusion on the surface is a source of stress concentration, which will lead to premature fatigue cracks between the inclusion and the matrix.
The quality of steel can be greatly improved by means of vacuum smelting and vacuum pouring.
 
5. Corrosive medium
Spring working in corrosive medium, due to the surface pitting corrosion or surface grain boundary corrosion and become a source of fatigue, under the action of variable stress will gradually expand and lead to fracture.
For example, spring steel working in fresh water has a fatigue limit of only 10 to 25 percent of that in air.
 
6.Temperature 
The fatigue strength of carbon steel decreases from room temperature to 120℃, rises again from 120℃ to 350℃, and then decreases again above 350℃. There is no fatigue limit at high temperature.
Heat resistant steel should be considered for springs that work under high temperature conditions.
The fatigue limit of steel increases at temperatures below room temperature.
